Visualization (Josie Cawdry)

For my final visualization for the new build i am proposing a stained glass style window for the 2 lanterns at the top of the building. Using thin glass with the image printed on in coloured ink i hope to create the illusion of movement and scope around the new build.

Strong image (Josie cawdry)

This is my final strong image, created using paper rolls, edited on Photoshop on and then made into a pattern.
I think the way in which this relates to my project has worked really well. As you will have read in an early post i did about these rolls they were created using important images i have worked with throughout the project.

What does the image make you think of? Does it hold any significance to you. I hope that by injecting an element of colour into the new build the spaces will feel more user friendly and less like a dark, empty space that feels lifeless.

Visualizations i may use (Josie Cawdry)

Here are a range of visualizations i created as a backup from the main one i wish to use in the new build.
I have used different light effects, colours and opacity's  to give each image a unique feel.

Feel free to leave a comment and let me know which image you like the best.

I am proud that i managed to create such finished images, as Photoshop has never been one of my strong points. I even managed to work out how to add vector people to make the visualization feel more real.

I think that i have had a real advantage as i was able to visit the new build first and and gain a valuable feel for the space, helping me to come to a decision on what to install into the building.

MY VISUALISATION-AMELIA FAYE TILT

These are the images of my work in situ, I'm not sure how well I have portrayed my ideas, and I hope that you can all see what I am proposing.

On Monday we had a talk with Kate about how to create context sheets and visualisations of our work in situ. This is something that really doesn’t appeal to me, from the beginning of unit X I wasn’t sure I’d enjoy being in the Living it category because I didn’t want to make textiles for interiors etc. That being said I obviously need to show what I would propose to do if my work was to be used in the new build. This meant trying to create a visualisation on Photoshop. At first I tried to avoid using Photoshop as I don’t feel confident enough to produce something that looks professional, I sometimes feel that if I can’t do something to a high enough quality I don’t want to share it. I understand that all work is something to build upon and improve but its just something I don’t feel confident in.
I started by creating a 2D drawing and creating a sample over the top, but it was flat and the paper I had used was grey and I think it took away from what I was trying to achieve. So I spoke to Mary and she said to use one of the images on the mmu website that the artist provided. So I photographed my drawing and moved into Photoshop to work with, the only trouble being that me sample was flat and the image I had used has a bend in the wall so I don’t think the final outcome has done what I want to achieve justice, I think that it is slightly grey in comparison to all the work I have produced during unit X as alot of my drawings and samples were very bold.

That being said, this is my visualisation for the new build.

I think in the morning I’m going to re draw the visual outcome because I’m not happy with my drawing so I will re post tomorrow morning before I got into uni.

Help anyone? - Charlotte Yates

I have spent possibly the last 12 hours stuck on photoshop trying to figure out a suitable image in situ, I even gave up at one point and began drawing my image for proposal instead! Finally I've gone back to it and come up with a design I thinks suitable for my work I just can't make my mind up which edited version I like best... I've screen printed the page with all 5 possible images on and would really be grateful of opinions :) thanks guys

Visualisation..

Today, I have been experimenting for my first ever time on Photoshop! It was quite a stressful day for me as the Mac laptops batteries had a tendancy to die, so it meant everyone swopping laptops every couple of hours! I was really proud of myself at the end of the afternoon as I had learnt a few techniques from listening to Mary's help. I used things like the blending brush to blend all the colours together so it looked realistic in the space. I used the lighting enhancer, to cast shadows on my structure. I also learnt how to cover parts of the photgraph up if you don't want it in your final outcome. On the left hand side of the photgraph, it started off with messy tool kits, radiators and windows with glaring lights shining through, which looked ugly when I placed my structure onto the wall, so I added in another white wall and moved the light forward to make it look realistic. I also duplicated my image as I stated in an earlier post i wanted it on a huge scale, which photoshop enabled me to do this. I played around with the scale and the amount of structures i attached onto the wall until i was 100% happy with my visualisation.
I really enjoyed experimenting with different tools on Photoshop and I feel I utilised my time spent creating effective outcomes.

Here's my final outcome:

Has everybody else got their visualistaions sorted? It would be really interesting to see everybody's work!

Using Plastic Wallets (Josie Cawdry)

As a way for me to try and get my digital images onto glass i decided to play around with the idea of printing directly from my printer onto a wallet and them immediately printing using the wet ink onto my glass frames.
At first the tricky part was getting the wallets to even go through the printer, after several minute of messing i found out that by removing the binding at the side the wallet would fit easily into the paper dock.

Image at the ready i pressed print and hoped for the best.

I was actually really surprised with the outcome, i think with the right image this technique is a really great way of printing onto my glass sheets!

Photoshop II (Josie Cawdry)

Thanks to Mary i now have the knowledge to create some basic patterns and images in Photoshop. I have been using my own images to try and create a nice bold pattern that can be transferred onto my glass sheets.
This is one of my patterns that i think works quite well.

Thinking about shape (Josie cawdry)

With the end now in sight my attention is now fully focused on creating a end piece, which will be turned into a digital outcome. After looking at the work of Shayna Leib i found myself drawn to creating cylindrical shapes, i plan to look at how i can turn cylinders into compositional art and maybe try and incorporate this with my idea of working onto glass panels.

Here are my very first attempts and using rolls in my work, i have simply laid them side by side to see what affect i get.

I like the way this last image gives the impression of trying to hide something that is underneath. This is similar  to my thoughts about rust and how they seem to hide the object underneath until it is no longer recognizable. Maybe something to think about?

MY ANIMATION-AMELIA FAYE TILT

On Tuesday I also used the scans of my work to make an animation, once Mary had explained and showed me what to do it was fairly simple....I hope I think that when I use this technique again as I really like the outcome. Using different methods to display my work is starting to catch on, what do you guys think. I could use this as my final piece?

LARGE FORMAT PRINTING-AMELIA FAYE TILT

These are some photographs of the digital work I have printed on A1 using the large format printers in Chathem. I love them, I think the work really changes when it’s larger and I can see it being used in a range of formats for the new build.

DIGITAL EXPERIMENTS-AMELIA FAYE TILT

After weeks of avoiding Photoshop because I’m scared how complicated it is, Mary convinced me to start experimenting so I went to a digital workshop today. Mary showed us the scanning and printing facilities available at uni and how to use them. I started by using the A3 scanners in the Mac suit, then I manipulated and duplicated areas of my paper samples. Playing with composition was really interesting, because it started to make me think of how I could start to propose final ideas. It also allowed me to think about what type of textile I want to create at the end of the project. Although I found it difficult at first to get my head around, once I got going I was comfortable to produce different things.

I also scanned in sections of my work to blow up and work into using the sewing machine or even work on top of using paper.

I have created an A1 image that I am going to print to also work into, although when I went to print them I got abit carried away and printed three, setting myself up for alot of work!!

My First digital outcomes (Josie Cawdry)

I really enjoyed the digital session that Mary Stark did yesterday, i never really thought of myself as a digital worker but was surprised at how much i actually enjoyed the work. We were asked to try and create our own patterns and brushes using photographs either of our own or from the internet.
With the help of photoshop i was able to create a virtual wall hanging piece for the art school, using my own images from the new build itself and a image i took from a gallery exhibition.

I did find the software a little tricky to get my head around at first but i am pleased with the final result.
I think with a little bit more practice i will be able to create a striking piece that can be displayed around Manchester as part of the end exhibition.

See below for my attempt at creating my own unique pattern!

Faces! lots and lots of faces!

Digital Image Workshop...(Hayley Bartram)

Hi guys,
I know there's been some confusion on this weeks timetable and a few of us missed the digital workshop lesson, so I thought these notes could help catch use up.
Firstly we were shown some videos that all represented unique things such as; advertisement, promotions and how to make certain items. As a whole the class was more interested in the short clip of 'how to make an oven mit', it was short, simple and could easily be followed.

We was also shown how to make and create a moving image short clip. A moving image is a series of sequential photographs, videos are constructed at about 25 frames or still images per second. This type of filming is becoming more popular to communicate worldwide.

Here are some useful websites that I was given;
www.fashioninfilm.com
www.liberty.co.uk/fcp/content/liberty-tv/newsarchive
www.laurabuckley.com
www.daniellearnaud.com/artists/artists-maurer.html
www.michaela-nettell.com/index.html
www.sarahpucill.co.uk

The basics we need to know;
Shot sizes:
  • Very long/wide shot
  • Long/wide shot
  • Medium long shot
  • Mid shot
  • Medium close up
  • Close up
  • Big close up
  • Extreme close up
  • Point of View
Camera movements:
  • Pan from left to right/right to left
  • Tilt up/down
  • Zoom in and out
  • Dolly in and out
  • Focus pulls
When creating a film like this it is really important to create a storyboard that ic clearly planned and labelled, it will make shooting the film easier, some storyboards can just be quick rough sketches whereas others can be extremely detailed, it is what you think works best for yourself.

Cameras can be booked out of the AV store which is located on the 6th floor in the Chatham building. If borrowing a camera from here make sure the SD card is formatted. If you want straight and smooth shots definately use a Tripod, in doing this your shots will be well composed.

adverts..

After the Digital talk yesterday, and after viewing Amelia's video that her brother had made whilst being at univerity, it reminded me of an advert i see daily on the tele. It's the E4 advert. There is the whole cast of the E4 presenters all creating different movements to music. It looks really effective how they have put a series of photographs together to create an advert.
It made me think about fun ways we can digitally present our work, the way we can show off our work in a different way to other groups? I really like how they present themselves as a group before they go on to say 'whats on' on E4 this week, because if it wasn't for them all working together their ratings wouldn't be as high as what they are, just like if we didn't cooperate as a team, we would result in lower marks.
We could show ourselves as a group to the camera before we went on to presenting our work as individuals? It's just an idea that popped into my mind after the talk. There's no harm in having a go at our own and posting it on here! Maybe on Tuesday when we meet at Hotspur? :)

ANIMATION

We had a digital workshop today with Mary Stalk, she explained what sort of facilities we have access to in the Av store in the Chathem building. She showed us a series of internet clips that use forms of video to promote artists work, or even advertisement for huge companies such as Olympus and Liberty London.(Hayley is going to post about the talk in more detail) The clips were really inspiring and I really think I could grow to love this technique, it’s a nice fresh way to show processes and final outcomes digitally.
WE were asked to come up with a concept for a short video clip of something that relates to our work, so in a small group (Me, Lindsay Swan, Charlotte Yates and Hayley Bartram) we decided to base our film on the Old School of Art, using stop animation. This is when you take a series of photographs and edit them together to make a vintage like film. We made a very rough story board and then went outside to film and this is what we came up with, hope you like it;

I have come across this style of work before; in 2006 my brother went to Reading University to study Fine Art and during his first term made this video with a group of friends of his course. I’ve always loved it because of the soundtrack but I can now appreciate the work that must have gone into producing it. Enjoy;
I haven’t made a link but if you type in group! art LOVE into youtube you can have a watch!

MOSI - Charlotte Yates

In our brief we have been told to create a digital outcome as our work will be being displayed on screens, these may be on Oxford Road, around Manchester or at the Museum of Science and Industry. Over Easter I took a trip the Museum of Science and Industry and by chance (as I didn't know all the screens where already up,) I got to have a good look around the space and it's surroundings in which one of the groups work will be exhibited.

I'm assuming the 50 screens currently being used for videos and images of visitors for a price in return will be where work from students in our year will be being showcased.
