My First digital outcomes (Josie Cawdry)

I really enjoyed the digital session that Mary Stark did yesterday, i never really thought of myself as a digital worker but was surprised at how much i actually enjoyed the work. We were asked to try and create our own patterns and brushes using photographs either of our own or from the internet.

With the help of photoshop i was able to create a virtual wall hanging piece for the art school, using my own images from the new build itself and a image i took from a gallery exhibition.

I did find the software a little tricky to get my head around at first but i am pleased with the final result.

I think with a little bit more practice i will be able to create a striking piece that can be displayed around Manchester as part of the end exhibition.

Today's digital workshop was a extremely session showing us how to use Photoshop to create layers, brushes and patterns.

Resolution

The resolution relates to the size and quality of a digital image. This is connected to how many pixels there are each square inch of the image itself. The more pixels, the higher the resolution and vise versa. The less pixels, the less resolution there is. When a picture with a low pixel count is enlarged the quality is decreased and the pixels become visible, making the image blurry.

• High resolution is needed for anything that is going to be sent to print.
• Low resolution images are needed for internet use so they appear quickly on the website.

To get the perfect images follow these simple steps;

1. check the size settings of the camera

2. use only natural light (artificial light will give a yellow tint)

3.photograph at midday

4.get closer for detail

5. place objects on a large clean white sheet

6.DONT use flash

7. try and not depend on editing software

8. in low light, always use a tripod

A few snaps of some fabrics I’ve dyed at home, I really like the crinkle effect that leaving them to dry has had. I’m not going to iron them, just rip them up to add to my samples. I think having a ripped edge will add texture.

Hope everyone is doing well with the essay!! I have been really ill over the weekend and been a bit useless with the group blog for a few days, sorry girls! I have had a look at a few artists CV's and come across a really good and useful one! Her name is Karen Nicol, the layout is really clear and very creative! It might help you if your a bit stuck with it or confused what to put on it! Obviously ours won't be aslong as hers as we haven't had all the education and exhibition tour that she has, although we could put what exhibitons we had visited, our subject grades, where we have studied and where we are currently studying!

New Art School - Charlotte Yates

Josie has practically said it all in terms of how the tour went and what key features to expect in the new build.. Thought I'd just do this post so you can all veiw my photos from the day too, that way we will all have more variety when it comes to chosing images for propsal and our digital work but also all of you that wern't lucky enough to be chosen for the tour will be able to visualise it as best as possible!

DEADLINE INFO- AMELIA FAYE TILT

Hey Guys,

Hope all you essays are going ok and your still managing to get some practical work done. I’ve come to abit of a standstill with my practical work, I feel like I need to get my essay done so I can stop worrying about it. But I’m so excited to get it finished so I can go back to making samples, I want to get into the embroidery workshop this week and get some work done so hopefully my essay will get done soon.  I was just posting to give you some info on our deadlines and the essay as I was getting a little confused. I don’t know if anyone else was feeling the same but I thought it would be sensible to tell you what Kate said to me today:

“The C.V. and Blogging Task submission deadline is the 8th May (you have already done blogging task in Jan).

This forms part of your contextualising practice unit not unit X - I met with all 'Living it' students last Monday to talk about this, please let me know why you did not attend as I think this has led to your confusion.

Please look at the pink blob notice board on unit X on a regular basis. There will be another message posted

about the submission of the CV and blogging task and how to submit it tonight.

Unit X Submission

Submission Deadline - Blog summary:

At the end of Week 8 (18th May) you will submit the self-evaluation and assessment form to the Coursework Receipting Office at the student SIP in Geoffrey Manton Building. On this form is a space for you to include a link to your individual blog.

For the assessment we will look at the work you have produced for the 'final outcome' as well as the work on the individual blog which should include a record of key points in the making and development of your work. The group blog will be assessed by your contribution to it.

There will be assessment and submission guidelines on the Unit X page shortly.

Regarding display of your work, you need to be attending your 'Living it' group tutorials every Thursday. Please attend tomorrow. The outcome of 'Living it' is a digital proposal - the proposal can be made from 'real' stuff that is photographed and put into a digital format.

Talk to your tutor and group about this tomorrow.

It made me feel abit better as I was really confused about what I was supposed to be doing and when. Hope this helps if you were stuck too!!!

New build tour (Josie Cawdry)

A new chapter. A new start!

Yesterday i was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to visit the site of the new art & design building! As you can imagine this was a very exciting experience and the atmosphere shared by the group of about 10 was electric! 

To begin with site manager, John Schofield lead us into a small meeting room to share with us some vital statistics and show us images of the proposed plans.

The Building is set for completion by December 2012 and will be open to the students January 2013.

The building comprises of a few key features, including;

 A Cafe

Open plan studios

Flexible working spaces

Roof top garden

Courtyard

Concrete pillar encased in an old wallpaper design

Lanterns on rooftop to let light into the building

500 meters of display rail

Conjunction between disciplines

Hard hat - Gloves - Goggles - High visibility jacket - Steel toe boots! 

After our briefing we were taken to the on-site office to be kitted out in the necessary equipment. For safety reason we were asked to wear the items above and were informed to stick together as a group at all times. Cameras at the ready we headed on site. There were a number of interesting features about the new build that stood out, in particular the open plan walkways and stairways.

Each of the 4 floors were open plan and over looking to the floor beneath, the fourth floor is home to 2 huge glass covered lanterns which were build in such a way that the natural flow of light is able to disperse to each corner of the building, even the ground floor entrance!

The main concept of the building is to have a wide open space that can be moulded and changed according to students needs.

The exterior of the building is simple, black paneled areas and sheets upon sheet of glass! As part of the new art school, the old Chatam building is having a complete renovation, starting from the roof and working its way down.

The top of the new art building is going to be something special, 5 storeys above street level will be a haven of activity as the roof becomes a new 'hidden garden'. Either side of the lanterns will be astro turf and planting areas, as well as possibly student artwork. 

Opportunities for students to showcase their art work is key in the new build and the architects have left plenty of free space within the interior for possible exhibitions, including the toilet walls! 

I found that instead of being interested by the building i was infact drawn to the building materials and tools left on the roof by the contractors! This ties in well with my project idea of transition as the poles used for scaffolding are a key component in changing the area, just as rubbish and debris are key to changing areas of Manchester such as the  backstreets and doorways that i have been focusing on.

I love the texture of the wood and the sense of wear and tear that comes to mind, similar again to my project. The tour has been a great source of inspiration for me and i left feeling really positive about the rest of the project and with plenty of new ideas running through my mind.
